Pats Draft - Day 1

OK so rounds 1 and 2 just finished up and the draft will continue tomorrow. Just a quick rundown on the guys they picked up so far. BB said picks 20-40 grade out similar so ideally they would trade down and thats what they did. The pay scale for the draft picks drops rapidly after the top of the first round so its a huge advantage to pick like NE did today.

The lesson you need to learn as a pats fan is that BB knows more than you. He will frustrate your life and never choose who you want but you just need to trust that evil genius. Hes operating on a different level than the rest of us.

Note, top 5 picks are so risky and can bury your cap if they don't work out. Top 5 picks get paid as the highest or near the highest paid players at their position without ever playing a game. Its a broken logic and is why you see the same trash teams picking that high every year. Its also why its so rare to see teams trade up to those spots anymore.

Pick 34 Patrick Chung/S Oregon - I didn't really even know this kid to be honest so I got on the horn and did some research. Hes a little bit of a tweener in terms of FS/SS but you can also call a tweener a hybrid. Hes really athletic, can add some bulk, likes to hit, good in coverage, and is a playmaker. Hes also supposedly a coach on the field, a leader in the locker room, and wont mind playing special teams at all. Sounds like a good fit. I love getting younger and more athletic on defense. Oh yea, this kid is sort of unique. He grew up in Jamaica playing soccer and didn't start football until HS. Also started college at 16 and started all four years.

Pick 40 Ron Brace/DT Boston College - The other half of the DT tandem that led the NCAA in rush defense. BJ Raji got the attention and went top 10 but Brace is a monster as well. At first I didn't like this pick because our DL is a strength but then I remembered we did see a lot of Mike Wright last year situationally so picking up a big anchor in Brace cant hurt. He can play nose in a 3-4 or a DT in a 4-3. Hes quick for his size, which is 6'3 340. If Brace works out, it also gives the team leverage and a backup plan with re-signing Wilfork.

Pick 41 Darius Butler/CB UConn - I have a soft spot for CBs so I loved this pick. Butler is sick. Kid played WR and returned kicks this year too. He can play man or zone which is a huge asset. Butler is an explosive athlete. Only 5'10 but has a 40 inch vert and great burst, especially out of his backpedal. Will be the best athlete in our secondary right away. I think this is a kid who should have gone 20 picks earlier. Cousin of Willis McGahee. Check out the vid of him with a basketball.

Also think about the pats CB's now. Hobbs better bring his A game to camp because Bodden, Springs, Butler, Wheatley, Wilhite are all trying to get on the field. I see probably Bodden and Hobbs starting with Springs and Butler as the nickel and dime but who knows.

Pick 58 Sebastian Vollmer/OT Houston - Some monster OT I didn't know. I guess hes from Germany and is a project but is 6'8 with good tools. Supposedly improved very fast with good coaching at the predraft Shrine game.

4 more picks scheduled for 10am tomorrow so stay tuned. Expect them to trade out of 1 or 2 but still should be interesting. So far the theme is getting younger and more athletic on defense with experienced, smart, and athletic players.
