Watching The Grammys With Wolfie

I don't really watch award shows anymore. The MTV ones were an event back in the day but those days have come and gone. Tonight I decided that I am going to watch the Grammy's just because I think I should. Why not blog about it in the process? Im going to jot a few notes while watching and then post it. (The ?/10 is what I personally rated the performance.)

- First, a couple facts. The Grammys they use at the ceremony are just "stunt grammys". The real ones are mailed to the winners later. Only four awards are not limited to their genre. This is called the general field. The general field is record, album, and song of the year, and best new artist.

- Dwayne Johnson, who you might know as The Rock, just took the mic to introduce Timberlake and made a cricket joke. He said Dave Grohl and Paul McCartney are in attendance and he likes to refer to them as the beatle fighters. Absolute silence ensued and Paul McCartney didn't even attempt to courtesy laugh. Luckily The Rock is universally liked, sort of in a Snoop Dogg way. He then passed it to another universally liked person, Timberlake. JT made an akward little speech with another bad joke that noone got and then he did a song with Al Green, eh solid (6/10)

(News: Chris Brown and Rihanna just involved the police. This is the reason why she cancelled her Grammy performance tonight. The original story was that the couple got in a car accident but it seems like that was just a cover up for this domestic dispute.)

- Jennifer Hudson just took home R&B album of the year. Her dress was hideous. Looked like a table napkin was draped over her fat boobs. And am I the only one that was a little disappointed when I found out the national anthem she sung at the Superbowl was a lip sync? I kind of hated that. If she wasn't up for it, find someone else who is. I would rather have an average version of the star spangled banner played instead of an incredible sync version. (Edit: I just found out the producers at the SB strongly insisted Faith Hill and Jennifer Hudson Lip Sync it.)

- Coldplay's Chris Martin just did a little collabo with Jay-Z and I liked it a lot (8/10). Now the place is rocking. I'm not always a fan of the cross genre collaborations, but Coldplay with hip hop has been something that works for me (Ex: Homecoming by Kanye). Martin then sprinted to the main stage and performed with his regular band, which was really good and woke everyone up.

- Carrie Underwood just performed and was looking angelic and sexy (8.5/10). Shiny golden brown legs and a face that could escort you to heaven. Shes one of those hot girls who gets a lot less attractive when she gains even 5 or 10 lbs, but those 10 lbs were not in attendance tonight. Speaking of extra pounds, Romo might have made the wrong choice. Jessica Simpson packed some blub on. Shes on pace to look like Dog the bounty hunters wife in the future. And oh yea, earlier in the night Ms. Underwood won the grammy for best female country vocals in "Last Name".

-Another performance and collaboration just went over pretty well (8/10). It was Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus. Miley's voice was actually really impressive and overshadowed Taylor a little. Not that Taylor was bad, but Miley could really use those pipes. I'm not sure when its going to be OK to admit but I'm just gonna say it now. Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus) is hot. If that isn't cool to say then Williams told me to say it. Seriously though she dates 20 year olds and is scary mature from what I've heard. Child stars always end up as crazies. Hopefully Miley's dad, Billy Ray, isn't too busy doing his hair to make sure his daughter keeps things in perspective.

-I know this has turned into a hot girls of the Grammy's post but Katy Perry just performed the most overplayed song of the year in I kissed a girl and I liked it (6/10). There was always a debate to whether or not she was that hot or not. Some people told me she was gorgeous and others said she was a 6/10. I was on the fence until I saw this picture. Click it to enlarge. She fills that thing out and looks great.

- Kanye just performed (8/10) and introduced us to the sweetest thing Ive seen at this ceremony, his fro-mullet. Jesus I love ridiculous people and Kanye is at the top of the list. He is ridiculous in a sweet way. His ego used to be ahead of even Diddy Im saying. But I like how in the new album hes growing up and talking about how material things aren't as important to him. "My friend shows me pictures of his kids, and all I got is pictures of my cribs" is one of the lyrics. He'll win a couple Grammys for 808s and heartbreak next year.

- Record of The Year award just went to Robert Plant and Allison Krauss. They really cleaned up tonight with 5 wins. I wasn't a fan personally but they got a ton of acclaim for the work.

- Hmm CSI commercial for tomorrow night just aired and Diddy is starring in it as an actor? I feel like Diddy is always going to be way better at producing than performing, or in this case behind the camera (figuratively) instead of in front of it. The guy is an entreprenurial beast but you can tell he always wished he was better at being an entertainer. In short, I'm sure he'll suck at acting but he can afford to, and I can't hate on someone whos hungry.

- Huge Swagger Like Us performance with the swag kings, along with a pregnant MIA, just went down. Not gonna lie, it was pretty sick. The radio burned this song out but the performance reminded me of the premise of it, the biggest names in the game stuntin to a fire beat/hook. The biggest names in the game all on stage together is cool to watch. Jay, TI, Kanye, and Weezy all in suits killin it 9/10. (peep Kanye's Fro-let)

- Jack Black presented best male vocal award and the winner was John Mayer for "Say". Jack Black is a little underrated and I absolutely love Mayer. I think John needs to get the flow back though. The short hair makes him look like a skinny goth rather than a rock and roller when the hair is flowing. Mayer also won a Grammy for "Gravity".

- Radiohead is on stage now. I never really got into these quirky nutcases. This performance was actually kind of cool though. They were accompanied by the USC marching band on stage and it actually ended up being a really good jam (8.5/10)

- There are way more performances than awards it seems like. That might be a good thing though. Not too much room for forced monologues and other filler on the telecast. The atmosphere seems charged up still. The Grammys are unreal.

- Samuel L just introduced TI and JT, who are performing Dead And Gone (7/10). I like this song a ton. TI isn't lip syncing but hes rapping over the song and not really catching up, sounds kind of crappy. This road to redemption thing by TI is pretty funny. Hes going to be disappointed that he went through all this when the judge slaps him with a dime.

- The head guy for the Grammys just took the mic and asked President Obama to appoint a secretary of the arts. Im a pretty liberal guy and definitely value art and creativity, especially in schools, but a secretary of the arts is asking a lot bro. We just need to revamp those systems in the public schools. And we do have a good chance with that with Obama in the oval office.

- Wow the Temptations are performing with Ne-Yo and Jamie Foxx stepping in for two of them who passed away. This is awesome. Jamie is taking over and killing it (9/10). Nick just IM'ed me and said that we might have to give Jamie Foxx the most talented entertainer in the world award. Guy won an Academy Award for Ray, nominated for Grammys as a singer, and he started off with comedy. (Youtube some of his stand up, youll love)

- Um Neil Diamond just did Sweet Caroline and everyone LOVED it. It was pretty bizarre. I thought it was only a hit in Fenway, apparently not. ND even got a standing ovation (6/10).

- OK its time for the hottest artist in the game to perform. Weezy just came out with Robin Thicke to do that New Orleans influenced song Tie My Hands (7.5/10). (If you haven't seen the Wayne interview with Katie Couric go peep that below). And I think its kind of funny that Robin Thicke is the son of Alan Thicke, the father from Growing Pains. OK back to the performance, pretty solid. Wayne is now introducing some New Orleans music legends and seems to be extremely respectful of them. This is a more classy version of Wayne than Im used to.

- Will.i.am and T-Pain are out to give the best rap album award. T-Pain looks like a combo of Willy Wonka and a homeless crack head. I guess hes the exception to my rapper's behavior theory (I think the history and presence of big names makes rappers be respectful at the Grammys). And the winner is.....? Lil Wayne - Carter 3. Weezy brought his family up on stage (including Birdman) and then said a quick thank you.

Im noticing that the Grammys seems to equal rappers on their best behavior. If you are a thug gangsta and are ever going to hit the off button, this is the place. I think the reason is because of two types of people being present at a historical ceremony, executives and legends. Executives are the only people who can tell rappers what to do. They are higher on the food chain so they have more money and power than the thugs. The old school legends like the Temptations and such, who paved the way, are also in attendance and can be idols of the younger crop of entertainers. They both command a lot of respect.

- Whoa little Green Day sighting to present album of the year. Lets see if C3 can beat Coldplay. And the Grammy for album of the year goes to Raising Sand, Robert Plant and Allison Krauss. Wow that blows to me. They just performed and I didn't even write anything about it because it was so uneventful. Whatever though, I guess a lot of (old) people loved it.

- And we close out to Stevie Wonder bringing it home, not bad.

General Category Winners

Album Of The Year
Raising Sand - Robert Plant and Allison Krauss
Comments: I would have gone with MIA Paper Planes out of these nominees.

Record Of The Year
Please Read The Letter - Plant/Krauss
Comments: I didn't think they were anything special. Must be a lot of old Zeppelin fans on the voting panel.

Song Of The Year
Viva La Vida - Coldplay
Comments: Just thank god it wasn't Plant/Krauss again. I would have gone with American Boy by Estelle and Kanye

Best New Artist
Adele
Comments: Realizing that this award is very highly regarded in the industry. I don't listen to the other nominees much so I'm OK with this girl, shes talented.

-Thanks for joining me during the 2009 Grammy awards. I think Im going to start watching this and the Oscars every year. It was pretty solid. The performances were really good and it was loaded with everyone in the music industry that mattered. See you in 2010.

(Off topic but I think terrorists would be smart to target the Grammy awards. Imagine if they could kill every important person in music at the same time? Talk about a downer.)

  4. Katy Perry is hot. As is Carrie Underwood. Underrated severly is Taylor Swift. My god she's a lil cutie. I don't agree with Miley Cyrus though, I think she has a balloon head and the faces she makes while singing really turn me off.
