Been meaning to highlight one of my favorite comedians, and one of the hottest entertainers in the biz right now, Demetri Martin.
In case you haven’t jumped on board yet, Martin just got a new show on Comedy Central. He used to write for Conan after he dropped out of NYU law school. He was nominated for an Emmy for his work on Conan and started to write for The Daily Show. Jon Stewart’s production group actually put on his new stand-up “Person.” You can find this is and his new show On Demand.
Martin is an intelligent comic and an f’n riot. He deadpans one-liner, but he’s not a punch-line comic. His humor is part observational, part irony. He’s like a cross between Seinfeld and Flight of the Conchords, so he’s right up my alley. Actually, he appeared on an episode of Flight of the Conchords, the season finale in Season 1. Forgot about that until I just Googled him.
Anyway, he’s going to be huge. His career reminds me of Dane Cook’s: real young, loyal underground following and he’s got a fresh approach. Here’s a little taste from his most recent stand-up, but honestly you could spend hours on YouTube looking at his stuff:
Speaking of Flight of the Conchords, that show’s been killing it this year. Those guys are launching a huge US tour, and they’ll be in Boston at Agganis Arena on April 17. I just found this out. So whack because it’s already sold out. Maybe a current BU student could help the WKFTB out?
Anyway, Murray in my opinion is the glue of the show. Obviously Bret and Jermaine are the main guys, but Murray makes everything funnier. I watched an On Demand special on the background of the show and was surprised to found out Rhys Darby is a comedian too and has his own stand-up. Guy’s huge in New Zealand. He’s big into sound effects. If you watch Conchords, look how different he looks:
Eh, what the hell, my two favorite Flight of the Conchords songs:
