A Tribute to....Men overachieving

And by this I of course mean dudes pulling chicks out of their league. Hugh Heffner is the prime example. Admit it, as much as you want to hate on them you envy them. Because it gives us all hope that an ugly dude such as ourselves can in fact pull some hot ass somehow. Maybe with our sweet personalities, or are charm, of by becoming famous. I am at work right now and have no real time to put into this post, so instead I am going to link you to a great site which explores sweet old dude athletes who have pulled hot tail. We pay homage to all of you....CHECK IT OUT

Warren Buffet Rules

From his letter to the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway....
Investors should be skeptical of history-based models. Constructed by a nerdy-sounding priesthood using esoteric terms such as beta, gamma, sigma and the like, these models tend to look impressive. Too often, though, investors forget to examine the assumptions behind the symbols. Our advice: Beware of geeks bearing formulas.
For those of you who don't know much about him, he is a financial genius that heads Berkshire Hathaway. Buffet has always been extremely wealthy. In 2008, according to Forbes he was worth an estimated 62 billion and overtook Bill Gates, who held the crown for 13 consecutive years, as the richest man in the world. The unique thing about Buffet is his extremely impressive philanthropy, charity, and general outlook on his wealth.
Buffet lives in the same house that he bought in 1958 for 31.5K, makes a 100k salary as the CEO for Berkshire Hathaway, and plans to give away the majority of his wealth before he dies. He is leaving some money for his kids but only "enough so they can do anything but not enough so they want to do nothing". Buffet is a strong proponent of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. So much so that in 2006 he donated 10 million class B shares to the foundation which had a value of approximately 30.7 billion dollars.
"I don't have a problem with guilt about money. The way I see it is that my money represents an enormous number of claim checks on society. It's like I have these little pieces of paper that I can turn into consumption. If I wanted to, I could hire 10,000 people to do nothing but paint my picture every day for the rest of my life. And the GNP would go up. But the utility of the product would be zilch, and I would be keeping those 10,000 people from doing AIDS research, or teaching, or nursing. I don't do that though. I don't use very many of those claim checks. There's nothing material I want very much. And I'm going to give virtually all of those claim checks to charity when my wife and I die." (Buffet 1988)
With 40 years of 20% compounding returns for Bershire Hathaway, Buffet is maybe the most successful investor ever. I said last week that I love to get his take on the economy when there is something I don't understand. His annual reports of Berkshire are read by pretty much anyone with an interest in finance. The shareholders meeting is held annually in Omaha and is a really large event. Last year an estimated 27,000 people attended it. Buffet does a presentation, speech, and Q and A, and all shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway are invited.
When Bill Gates first met Buffet the meeting was scheduled for 30 minutes. It turned into 10 hours and Gates became a strong advocate and devotee of Buffet's philosophy. The guy is 78 years old wears Lebron's sneakers. He loves throwing out first pitches at MLB games. He doesn't have a driver or a cell phone. He rarely ever flies on a private jet even though he owns one of the world's largest private jet companies. He bough a farm at age 14 from savings and investments from a paper route. Buffet was one of the biggest reasons why I was confident in voting for Obama. He was an economic adviser and big advocate for Barack as President. When the economy was plummeting and congress was considering the bailout, Buffet put 5 billion of his own money into the newly restructured Goldman Sachs to attempt to stabilize it and urge congress to pass the bailout as soon as possible. Soon after his investment in GS, he put 3 billion into GE for the same reason.
Its refreshing to see such a wealthy man have such a down to earth grasp and outlook on reality. Buffet's thoughts and advice on finance and the economy are still extremely relevant. In short, as the title of the post says, Warren Buffet rules. What an extraordinary man.
(This following video is of the interview with Warren Buffet by Charlie Rose. It was done a few months ago but its really good and relevant. Its an hour long so it might not be for everyone. But if you have an interest in the economy or finance than I would suggest checking it out or maybe just reading the transcript.)

Know what I've been thinking?
You know the one drink that if I’m drinking it, I KNOW I’m partying that night?? Go
ldschlager. If I’m swilling goldschlager there is a 95% chance it’s straight out of the bottle, a near-empty bottle, and probably the top off to a hammer time night. I would never EVER buy the stuff but for some reason during huge nights, someone will bring a bottle of that around. And there’s really no other way to drink it at 1 AM than right out of the bottle. Plus when you’re drinking little pieces of “gold,” it just screams partying.
A verrry underrated driving move is the sun visor turned to the side to block the sun. Some peeps have never even unlocked that thing. Sometimes I forget it can do that. But if you’re traveling north/south and the sun is setting to the west, you need to drop and flip that thing to save your peripherals.
You ever notice when people reach down to get something (like behind a couch or under a desk while sitting) they always make a “reach down” face? What’s up with that? Drop a pencil at your feet in an au
ditorium and have to reach down with the head up? You’re getting a lip bit, eyes crooked to the sky. Something you need to get behind the couch? Same face but with more of a head tilt.
Know what I’ve always wanted to say? “Scramble some F-18s.” Don’t care how or where, just scramble those things. I don’t actually even know what it means, but if something is going wrong, I’d very much like to scramble some F-18s to the area. Hopefully that works out for me.

Kanye's Blog

I know hes controversial. You probably love him or hate him. For my money though, Kanye is a creative genius. Even when he goes on the most incredible space cadet rants, I can't help but be entertained. I want to recommend that you guys check out his blog. I put the link over on the right or its right here KanYe West: Blog. Its not going to be for everybody but the art, architecture, music, girls, and more that he puts up there does it for me. I like that hes not afraid to try new things. As much as I liked "Crack A Bottle", it kind of pisses me off that it was the best that the biggest tandem in the game could come up with. I loved 808s and heartbreak, or when Wayne did "I Feel Like Dying". I think that the best in the industry should be creative and talented enough to always be pushing the envelope. Thats why I like crazy Kanye so much. Thats just my take though. Im sure a lot of you disagree. Again, check out the blog if you are a fan of his. (The videos of the VH1 Storytellers performance are really entertaining.)

Demetri Martin, Rhys Darby and the Conchords
Been meaning to highlight one of my favorite comedians, and one of the hottest entertainers in the biz right now, Demetri Martin.
In case you haven’t jumped on board yet, Martin just got a new show on Comedy Central. He used to write for Conan after he dropped out of NYU law school. He was nominated for an Emmy for his work on Conan and started to write for The Daily Show. Jon Stewart’s production group actually put on his new stand-up “Person.” You can find this is and his new show On Demand.
Martin is an intelligent comic and an f’n riot. He deadpans one-liner, but he’s not a punch-line comic. His humor is part observational, part irony. He’s like a cross between Seinfeld and Flight of the Conchords, so he’s right up my alley. Actually, he appeared on an episode of Flight of the Conchords, the season finale in Season 1. Forgot about that until I just Googled him.
Anyway, he’s going to be huge. His career reminds me of Dane Cook’s: real young, loyal underground following and he’s got a fresh approach. Here’s a little taste from his most recent stand-up, but honestly you could spend hours on YouTube looking at his stuff:
Speaking of Flight of the Conchords, that show’s been killing it this year. Those guys are launching a huge US tour, and they’ll be in Boston at Agganis Arena on April 17. I just found this out. So whack because it’s already sold out. Maybe a current BU student could help the WKFTB out?
Anyway, Murray in my opinion is the glue of the show. Obviously Bret and Jermaine are the main guys, but Murray makes everything funnier. I watched an On Demand special on the background of the show and was surprised to found out Rhys Darby is a comedian too and has his own stand-up. Guy’s huge in New Zealand. He’s big into sound effects. If you watch Conchords, look how different he looks:
Eh, what the hell, my two favorite Flight of the Conchords songs:
